My Vow of Silence

Have you ever experienced driving on the Pacific Coast Highway? I discovered this California treasure after moving here in 1997, and I enjoy this magical drive at least 3 times a year.

The stretch of heavenly road from San Simeon to Carmel is otherworldly. One of my regular stops is Julia Pheiffer Burns Park, where resides the only waterfall in America that spills onto the beach and into the sea. (Notice my amazement)

Nearby, in the small town of Lucia , atop a mountain, is nestled the Camaldolese Hermitage. I had heard of their silent retreats, and took advice to book a year in advance. I chose to spend seven nights. I had no clue that I would be so affected.

A year has passed since I took my vow of silence in Big Sur. I am now finally ready to share this experience.The following pages are from a diary I kept while there.
